Recital Wrap-Up
THINKING ABOUT THE 3 R’s:
RELAX
REFLECT
REJUVENATE
If you have not already begun to do so, it is time to wrap up all of the lose ends pertaining to your recital. Yes, that even means going through the lost and found or calling Susie’s irate mother about the stain that appeared on her expensive ballet costume during the performance. It also means writing thank you notes and making special phone calls to those whom helped with your success. More importantly, it is an important time for you to reflect on the recital and decide what you liked (and will continue to do), and what you didn’t like (things that will need to be changed). I suggest beginning this process with a notebook and pen, in your favorite chair by the pool side, on a beach or any special place where you can relax and clear your mind. Begin by simply going backwards. How was the after party? Was it a positive experience for everyone that you invited? How about the actual cleaning up of the theatre; did you have enough help so that you could spend all of your time doting over your students? Going back a little further to the end of the recital; were you pleased with the finale and bows? Did you remember everyone in your closing speech? Continue this process reflecting on each dance, it’s choreography and costume. Now look back to the rehearsals, picture day, costume distribution and events leading up to the big day. You might find that this process brings you all of the way back to the beginning of the school year; exactly where you will want to begin, in just a few short weeks. Write memos in the margin of your notebook when an idea concerns a certain person or needs special attention. This will make it easier when you leave your special relaxing spot and begin to take action. The actual process of sitting and reflecting on the past year allows you to clear your mind and brings relaxation. Know that you are accomplishing something that will undoubtedly help next year’s rat race seem less stressful!
Teachers! Recital wrap up is quite similar for you. Although you don’t have the enormous responsibilities of an owner or director, this process of reflecting will do you a world of good. Reflect on your role at the recital, did you play an important part in the running of the program? Were your students well prepared? Were you visible and helpful to your students and their parents? Continue reflecting back on the entire year. Decide what you thought you did well and what you would like to improve upon. Then, you will be ready to begin anew in September with a fresh outlook.
